Sam L. VanLandingham is a retired biostratigrapher, diatomist, professor, and consulting environmentalist/geologist. His many interests resulted in degrees in geology and botany. He holds a B.S. from Texas Technological University, A.B. and M.A. degrees from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. from the University of Louisville, Kentucky. A prolific writer, he has over 100 publications in print, including his eight-volume Catalogue of the Fossil and Recent Genera and Species of Diatoms. Sam became interested in the Valsequillo project in 1999 and later corresponded with Repenning, whom he once met briefly for conversation and Mexican food while on a visit to Denver.
